Dog Training Collars – Different Types of Dog Training Collar

A dog training collar is different from the normal collar your dog will be wearing, as it is designed specifically to control you dog or puppy when you are teaching her new commands. But with so many different dog training collars available, which will be right for your dog? Here’s some options of different dog training collars and how and when to use them:

Buckle Or Leather Dog Training Collars

Made of leather, cloth, or woven nylon, this dog training collar is manufactured on the same principle as a belt for pants. It is fine for a very small dog or for one that responds t o slightest pull, but by and large, its value is limited for training purposes.

Head Halter

A head halter or dog harness is more of a headset than a dog training collar – it fits the dog’s entire head and is particularly useful when handling dogs that can be aggressive with other animals. It gives the trainer the added advantage of being able to turn the dog’s head when necessary.

Chain-Link Or Choke Collar

I particularly recommend a lightweight, chain-link dog training collar for the heeling lesson. It provides both quick pressure around the neck and a snapping sound, both of which get the dog’s attention.

To put the chain-link dog training collar on your dog properly, slip one loop of the chain through one of the rings at the end of the collar. Lay the collar down on a flat surface and create the letter "P" with the chain. Pick the collar up by sliding your right hand through the loop of the "P" With your dog facing you, hold his muzzle with your right hand and let the collar slip over his head and down around his neck. You can then snap the dog leash on to the free ring of the collar.

The chain-link collars are constructed of metal links that are graduated in size, depending on the size of the collar. The smallest collars are made of links that are practically mesh, while the choke collars suitable for large or giant-sized dog are made of rugged and sturdy chains.

Take your dog along with you when you shop for this collar. Your pet supply source will then be able to advise you which dog training collar would be most suitable for your dog and the proper way to put it on.
