You must not confuse the command “Wait” with “Stay.” “Wait” is used at a curb, when going outside with your dog, or getting in and out of the car. It is not too difficult to teach this, although very enterprising or bold pups will have more difficulty with it.
Put a slip collar and leash on the dog. Take it to the front door, give the command “Wait,” and then open the door. If the dog wants to go out, give a short jerk on the leash and say “Wait.” It is not necessary for your pup to stay in the same basic position, as long as it stays behind the threshold. After a couple of seconds, you can end the waiting by rewarding your puppy and then saying “OK”. See to it that you go through the door first; your dog always goes last.
