Puppy Bed

You’ll definitely want a puppy bed for your new pet when you bring him home, mainly because your puppy needs its own place to go to in the house – somewhere it can always lie undisturbed. A young puppy in particular will make good use of this, because it still needs a lot of sleep. This place can be a basket, a mattress, a cushion, or a purpose made puppy bed.

Whatever you use as a puppy bed, remember that puppies are at the "discovering" stage and they will certainly investigate whether their bed can be torn up and how it tastes. If, at a young age, a dog has experienced what fun it is to pick a mattress or a soft cushion to pieces, it will continue to do this later.

Therefore, a basket or a soft cushion are not suitable for a puppy. A hard plastic puppy bed or a strong dog bench is a better choice, but the best is an indoor kennel. The choice of bed for the puppy is particularly important for large, short-coated breeds. They need a soft puppy bed to prevent ugly hard skin from forming on the joints and other pressure points. It is impossible for you to provide a comfortable bed if your dog continually picks it to pieces. It is better to wait until it has passed through adolescence before you introduce beds of this kind.

You could buy two puppy beds, which will give you the opportunity to let the dog into the living room during the day and evening and at night into the kitchen or laundry room, for example.

Particularly while your dog is not completely house trained or chews things up in its urge to explore, having a puppy bed in the kitchen or some place else where it can do no damage is ideal.

Use a blanket that is machine-washable for the basket. A loose blanket has the advantage that you can take it with you when you take your dog along on a visit. You then always have a temporary but familiar "puppy bed" with you for your dog.
