Training Your Puppy To Heel
Saturday, April 25th, 2009When you begin training your puppy or grown dog to walk along on the leash, you should accustom him to walking on your left side. The leash should cross your body from the dog collar to your right hand. The excess portion of the leash will be folded into your right hand, and your left hand will be used to make corrections with the leash.
A quick, short snap of the leash with your left hand will snap the choker dog training collar and keep your dog from lunging from side to side, pulling ahead, or lagging back. Training your puppy requires lots of repetition, so as you make a correction, continue to give the heel command. Keep the leash slack as long as your dog maintains the proper position at your side.
If your puppy begins to drift away, give the leash a jerk and guide him back to the correct position giving the heel command then let the leash go slack. Your routine for training your puppy will be much less effective if pull on the lead with steady pressure.
When training your puppy to heel, what is needed is an insistent but gentle jerking motion to get his attention. Once your dog gets the hang of it, you can practice turning and walking at different speeds. Your daily walks should be much more enjoyable for both you and your dog.
When you’ve finished training your puppy for the day, do not leave the chain-link dog training collar on your dog when training sessions are finished. Some dogs are ingenious at getting their lower jaw or legs caught in the training collar and could seriously hurt themselves if you aren’t around. Also, changing to the chain-link collar at training time signals to your dog that this is all business and it is time get serious.
